According to a tradition, started in the 7th century, this is the place where Veronica came out of her doorway and wiped Jesus' tired and tormented face, at which, His "true likeness" was miraculously imprinted on the veil. In Greek, "true likeness" translates as Vera Icon, hence the name Veronica. Veronica is identified with the woman who was cured of an issue of blood that had afflicted her for 12 years, when she touched the hem of Jesus' garment (Matthew IX).
